Toronto Blue Jays fans will always remember the catch.

In Game 3 of the 1992 World Series, Devon White made a leaping catch in center field, denying David Justice of the Atlanta Braves a hit. The famous catch secured White into the memory of Blue Jays fans, who to this day recognize him whenever he’s in Canada.

“I have a great relationship with the fans of Toronto,” White said Friday night in Buffalo. “I mean, I still go places and they recognize me. It’s a lot of fun to see they still know the game. Then, hearing that I’m here with the Bisons, they know where to find me you might say.”

White joined the Buffalo Bisons staff last year as a hitting coach and returned to the club this season as a position coach.

Saturday, he will be back in Toronto as the Blue Jays celebrate the 25th anniversary of their back-to-back World Series championships at the Rogers Centre. White will join more than 20 alumni and coaching staff from the 1992 and 1993 teams for a pregame ceremony.

1992 — The first World Series game is played outside the United States. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Candy Maldonado’s bases-loaded single in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays, backed by homers by Joe Carter and Kelly Gruber, take a 2-1 lead in the series.

1993 — Devon White’s two-run triple capped a six-run eighth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a 15-14 victory over the Phillies and a 3-1 World Series lead. The 29 runs shattered the series record of 22 set in Game 2 in 1936, when the Yankees beat the New York Giants 18-4. It was also the longest nine-inning game in series history — 4 hours, 14 minutes.

2004 — Just three outs from being swept in the AL Championship Series three nights earlier, the Boston Red Sox finally beat the New York Yankees, winning 10-3 in Game 7 to become the first major league team to overcome a 3-0 postseason series deficit. David Ortiz, the series MVP, hit a two-run homer in the first off Kevin Brown, and Johnny Damon quieted Yankee Stadium in the second inning with a grand slam on Javier Vazquez’s first pitch.

2015 — Daniel Murphy homered for a record-tying fifth straight game in the postseason, sending Jacob deGrom and the New York Mets over the Chicago Cubs 5-2 for a 3-0 lead in the NL Championship Series

Does it seem like 25 years have passed since White was winning World Series titles in Toronto?

“I don’t think about it, to tell you the truth,” White said. “When you get up there it’s like, ‘Wow, it’s been a long time.’ But it doesn’t seem like 25 years.

“Of course, you want to see (your former teammates) and make sure they’re in good health because you haven’t seen them in a while. But for the most part it’s to show your appreciation to the fans. They want to see us.”

The fans are what have made his legacy as a Toronto Blue Jay special. White made his Major League debut in 1985, when he was 22 years old and playing for the California Angels.

By 1987 he was a regular big-leaguer. A trade between the Angels and Blue Jays brought him to Toronto for the 1991 season. White signed as a free agent with the Florida Marlins in 1995 and played with Arizona, the L.A. Dodgers and Milwaukee before retiring in 2001. Through his 17-year MLB career, he was an All-Star three times and a Golden Glove winner seven times.

But no matter where he went in his baseball career, Toronto always felt like home.

“When you’re playing the game, you have a job to do,” White said. “As successful as we were, you didn’t realize it until you were out of the game and you come back and (experience) the reception they give us. Or when I used to come to town with another team, the reception I got was always loyal fans. I’ve always said that it’s a second home for me.”

His current baseball home is Buffalo, the spot of his first coaching gig. But coaching can be challenging since there’s so much to learn and only so much a staff can teach over the course of a season.

And then, well, the kids today, they’re different, he laughs.

“They’re more in-tune with Twitter, online stuff,” White said. “They know transactions and who’s playing where and things like that. They think they know more about the game than you do because they’re reading on the internet. But when they’re actually in the game and we ask them ‘Why did you do this?’ and they tell us, then we tell them, ‘No, you’re wrong.’ Because we think the game through to the end. That’s a young person.

“They tend to voice their opinion a lot more now than we did back in the day,” White said. “I have kids that age now, so it’s like, ‘No, it’s not going to go that way.’ Somebody’s got to be out there to say that. But we have a good core of kids. I call them kids, but they’re young men. And the chemistry is good. There’s always going to be a few of them that are entitled because that’s the generation right now. But for the most part, we have a bunch of good young men.”
